‘Living on the Edge’ embraces the impact of environmental factors on the coastal edge. The research studies an innovative approach towards the relationship between coastal conditions, programming, material technology, and tectonics.
The project acknowledges and embraces erosion as a ‘transformation that takes place over a period of time’ rather than as an environmental hazard. The result is a structure that responds directly to environmental factors and is environmentally responsible as it takes on the role of a superimposed man-made structure taken over by nature.
‘Living on the Edge’ explores material technology as a key component of the adaptable and transformable built environment. The research explores new opportunities and offers alternative coastal programs more suitable for sites which undergo severe erosion.
This research was directed to study of form, function and performance, material science and their impact on marine environment and coastal conditions at Point Loma, CA and Point Judith, RI.
The material science section of this research investigates the developed of a new type of bio-regenerative concrete. The material embraces failure and is designed to enrich the marine ecosystem over time.
The project proposes man-made coastal structures and submerged reef as two interventions that intend to a) reduce the rate of erosion, b) embrace erosion and the changes in marine conditions, and c) support a healthy ecosystem.

A Living Edge Shoreline
The design prioritizes the establishment of an ecologically vibrant living edge along the waterfront. This living edge framework is an ecological restoration strategy that will protect and provide habitat for amphibious life in the region. Pocket wetlands will enhance the shoreline for birds, while designated areas are proposed for freshwater mussel release and monitoring. The piers and Log Jam Gardens provide a protected environment for numerous fish species along with opportunities for environmental education. Green infrastructure throughout the park such as rain gardens and wetlands will capture and clean stormwater before it enters Lake Monona.
Once the lake’s edge has been established, pedestrian infrastructure will be introduced to facilitate a stronger connection to the core of Madison’s downtown and south neighborhoods. Improved intersections, widened walking paths, and separated bike lanes will create a new waterfront that is accessible for all people at all times.
